So over this weekend was the 33rd annual Loeries, which if you haven’t heard, awards special, student and professional awards for all things creative.
Whilst the list is extensive, rest assured that the Cape Town talent did exceptionally well, sweeping away many of the mentioned awards.

The Loerie Awards encompass all areas of brand communication including television, radio and print, communication design (including brand identity, architecture & interior design, package & publication design, motion graphic design), direct marketing, PR Communication, non-broadcast video, live events, sponsorship, digital communication and integrated campaigns.
All in all, 230 awards were handed out, varying in category and prestigiousness, but let us give you a quick breakdown of the special awards that were won:
Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award – Tracy Hirst
EMI Music Award – McCann Erickson for 8.ta’s ‘Emoticon Boy’ TV Commercial.
Vodacom Mobile Award - 140 BBDO and Native for the ‘Visi Covet’ iPhone application.
SAPPI Creative Use of Paper Award - Grid Worldwide Branding for the Munken Book of Creation
Ubuntu Award, sponsored by Hetzner - to The Jupiter Drawing Room Cape Town for their Woolworth’s campaign
SABC New Voice Award for non-English Radio - Draftfcb Johannesburg for their Gidani Radio campaign
ADreach Street-Pole Award - to Ogilvy Cape Town for Stimorol’s ‘Yoda’.
Adams & Adams Young Creatives Award - Kenneth van Reenen, copywriter at MetropolitanRepublic and Sophia Strydom, graphic designer at Joe Public.
Creative Future Scholarship - Ayesha Daniels from Gardens Commercial
STUDENT AWARDS
This year, five Gold Loeries were awarded:
- Lubabalo Mtati, from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, for his integrated campaign, ‘Kultured: A way of learning’.
- Lodewyk Barkhuizen, from the Open Window School of Visual Communication, for his motion graphics film, ‘The Well’.
- Ben Johnson, Nina Nelson and Warrick Sherrell, from AAA School of Advertising Cape Town, for their ‘National Geographic Calendar’.
- Jolize Jacobs, from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, for her Converse packaging, ‘One size fits all’.
- Zelé Angelides, from the University of Johannesburg, for her publication, ‘Kindle’.
And, one Craft Gold Loerie was awarded:
Lubabalo Mtati, from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for his poster campaign, ‘Kultured’.
